Steaua played well, but was defeated on Anfield!

Steaua played a good game on Anfield, but lost because of a Liga 2 defender and a mistake made by the referee.


Tănase scored the first Romanian goal ever on Anfield Road and narrowly missed the second goal that would have made it 2-2.

You have to be confident from the very first moment to resist on Anfield. If you are afraid and you give away your opponets a goal in the 37th second, then you're sure victim. Ilie Dumitrescu immediatly aplauded his players and tried to motivate them.

And thea reaction of the team was excellent. Steaua forgot that the score was 1-0 for Liverpool, forgot that no Romanian team has ever scored on Anfield and started to put pressure on the home side. Stancu started to show his class and gave a wonderful pass for Cristi Tanase, just like former Romanian star Adrian Ilie used to. Steaua's captain managed to slip past Liverpool's defenders and tied the score with a magnificient goal.

It was then that Anfield was silenced. Steaua's fans dominated in the stands supporting the Romanian team. Steau was dominatig the pitch and was pushing the game towards Pepe Reina's goal. Kapetanos pushed the Spaniard to his limits, but he was caught offside.

Help from the referee
Steaua continued to put pressure on the English side, but started to make some mistakes in the defence. Tătăruşanu made once again a great match and saved his team on many ocassions. Joe Cole, Maxi Rodriguez and Babel couldn't beat him. Liverpool started very confident the second half. Ilie started to feel that his players were starting to lose ground and made a radical change. He substituted Anghelov and brought in Bonfim as a right defender. Nicolita regained his position on the right side of the midfield, while Radut took Anghelov's place next to Bicfalvi.

Steaua was immediatly executed. The referee saw a foul on a contact between Kapetanos and Kyrgiagos and gave a penalty. Ngog didn't miss and Liverpool was in the lead. Tănase missed an incredible chance. He passed Kyrgiakos and was one on one with the goalkeeper, but couldn't manage to keep his concentration and shot wide. Steaua played a good game, but Liverpool was the one who took all the points.
