Mihai Covaliu decided to retire from the competition and he would like to train his colleagues
Yesterday started the sabre National Championships in Floreasca Hall from Bucharest, Mihai Covaliu, who won the Olympic bronze at Beijing, was presented in the hall, but didn’t enter for the competition.
- I do not participate to these contests!, said the swordsman.
- Did you spread your holiday?
- This is also a way of saying…
- Have you taken a major decision with respect to your career?! Do you want to retire?
- Yes. In a proportion of 90 %, yes, I will retire.
Mihai Covaliu will make soon 31. He could participate to at least an Olympiad. But he is weary of staying away from his family: his wife and the two children. Sword means cantonments and a lot of competitions abroad. Covaliu’s plans for the future include opening a sword school. But now he wants something else. "I want to participate to the training of my colleagues. I have to discuss with president of the federation, Ana Pascu", said Covaliu.
MIHAI COVALIU
- born on 5th November 1977
- golden at the OG Sydney 2000
- bronze at OG Beijing 2008 Mihai Covaliu: "I’ve worked very hard for this medal, much more than for the Sidney gold"
- gold, silver, bronze at the World Championship
- gold and bronze at European Championship
"Yes, I have discussed with Covaliu. He will be part of the technical team from the sword lot. We only have to establish if he still participates in competitions or not. It is important that he remained in the swordsmanship."
Ana Pascu, the president of FRS
