Ana Brînză: "I don't know to give up"

Articol de GSP - Publicat miercuri, 10 septembrie 2008 00:00

Ana Brînză says that she has never had idols and that the divine energy always helped her when she was in a competition

Vice Olympic champion from Beijing has seen the entire world, but she feels most comfortable at home, in Romania. When she retires, over many years, she would like to open a sword play school in a little town where nobody heard of this sport. She is conscious that she was born to make sword and sometimes she frightens at the thought that she doesn’t know what job would be the next, if sward disappears.

- What do you like about Ana Brînză and what you hate about Ana Brînză?
-
I like that I do not know to give up, no matter how hard would be. Really, I always say to myself that I have to try at least. It’s good to know that I‘ve done all my best. I like that people find me cliquish. I do not like that sometimes I incline to become a perfectionist with respect to the people around me. And I am lazy I the morning. ;) And I am ironic, too and people who do not know me think sometimes that I am malicious. But I am not.

- Have you ever admired someone very much, any character from a book or a real person?
-
No, I have never had an idol. I have always said that I want to be better than Laura Badea. Once, at a national championship, I won and I felt that the grave t-shirt made me better than Laura, who was Olympic championship.

FUTURE PSYCHOLOGIST?

- If you didn’t make sword, what job would you like?
-
I’ve never thought about this. Not even when I was a child and other children of my age said that they would like to become ballerinas, dustmen or doctors. I wasn’t saying anything. Now, I think that I would choose psychology.

- Coach?
-
I don’t think so. If I open a sword play club in a little town where nobody heard of this sport, I am sure that will be a success.
- Do you have any strong memory since you were a child?
- It’s strange, I feel as I forgot all the things I have done in my childhood. I remember that I used to go to Focşani, at my grandmother, and I have always had my knees scraped, my nose was broken. :o That’s all I remember from my childhood: That I was tomboy.

- How did you stand in with your brother Marius?
- Like cat and mouse. We started to pull well together when left home, to Craiova, at the Sword Olympic Center.

- Did you miss your family?
-
I do not know how to. I cannot make a comparison. I have lived my adolescence far away from them, but I have always felt them close to me. If my mother and my father hadn’t been by my side, somebody would have helped me. I have never felt an under-privileged child.

- Do you still have any friend from the period before leaving to Craiova?
-
I have only one friend since I was a little child. She has never forgotten to call me. As a matter of fact I was thinking of her few days ago. She is a married woman. We went on so much different ways and we are both winners, but in different domains. But most of my friends are from Craiova.

- You spoke about marriage. How does look the perfect man in your opinion?
- If I knew, he would have been, probably, here, with us. I think he has to be very calm, to equilibrate me, and I am an agitated person. He doesn’t need to be an Adonis on a white horse or in an expensive car. My relatives were laughing on me and said that after this medal there will be lot men at my door. It’s not that way and I do not care. I just know that he is there, somewhere and he waits for me.

- Do you like cars?
-
I hate cars and I don’t like to drive. One year ago I took my driving license because I needed very much; because I realized that I was spending all my salary on taxies.  I have a Renault Clio. I like my car.

- Do you have any regret with respect to a thing you did or you haven’t done?
- No. Many people say that I should regret the fact that I haven’t studied in the USA. I was offered a scholarship there, when I was in high school. But this is their regret, not mine. I think I was born here, because here I have to be. I feel comfortable in Romania. :)

SHE LIKES TO DANCE

- How close is your connection with God?
- I have a friens in Craiova who always "Up, there, somebody loves us". I have been to Lainici Monastery to pray for me and my family. I this is not material, but there is something which makes you go there and it mobilizes you. An energy which helps me in the gymnasium. Someone who is beside me, but whom I do not see.

- How is the perfect holyday for you?
-
A silent island, I and the lounge, a cocoanut cocktail. But only for two days. Then I want to do something: sports such as scuba, ski jet, which I’ve scarcely tried this summer. I was afraid until now.

- Which is the most beautiful place you have ever seen?
-
The Pyramids in the night, Barcelona is gorgeous, the shining Cuba, the Hermitage Museum and Paris, I will go there will the perfect man, when we’ll find each other. There are many places I like. But I have seen all thanks to my job.

- Music. Do you prefer to listen or to dance the music?
-
Both. If I listen to entertainment music, I am not ashamed to dance in shops or on the street. But I do not dance alone at home.

- Which is the toughest lesson you learned in life?
- I don’t think I was hard tired. I didn’t have problems, my family was solid. I don’t know what means to hang in the balance. I am a normal person, lucky and I hope to remain like this.

- Courageous people like you; do they ever lose their nerves, do they ever feel astir with something?
-
Courageous people feel like this more than anybody else. Before the contest in Beijing, my feet were trembling so much, so that all the people looked at me. The same happened at the exam for driving license. I don’t need to say that I am touched at any scene in the street: almsmen, lame dogs. You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t have feelings.

- You have a dog, too. Do you love animals?
-
My dog Paul is special. I received it as a present from someone who thought I felt alone in Craiova. Once, I wanted to give it to someone, but my mother said that I can leave, but the dog stays. As for the rest, I am afraid of dogs. I can get round five streets if I have to, but I do not want to meet a pack of dogs. But I am more afraid of cats. :o I can’t even look in their eyes because I am afraid of them.

A PINK ROOM AND A LOT OF FRIENDS

- If you had a lot of money, how would you make your house?
- For the moment, I live in an apartment with two rooms, received from my grandmother, and I feel very good there. If could built a house, it would be a big one and five rooms would be the dressing, because I like cloths. Am sure that a room would be pink and I would also have a fitness hall and a big living to invite my friends.

- Box, football, target shooting. Chose a sport!
-
The target shooting is of great precision, does not encourage creativity. And I like to create. Box is too tough and sometimes the sportsmen got diseased. So, I chose football. I even play football in the training camp. It is funny, active. But the foot tennis is best.

- Would you ever like to make politics?
-
No. I have no idea. All the Romanians are good at politics and football. I am good only at football. I hardly know the name of two parties and I feel good that I know who the president of the country is.

- Which is the biggest evil that could happen to you?
- I cannot decide myself between losing a beloved person and being forced to give up the sword play. But I don’t want to think about this thing.

THE INVITATION
I challenged Ana Brînză to a sword play. Why? Maybe from unconsciousness. :) She accepted and said to me gallantly that we will use "her" arm , sabre, and not sword. It’s useless to say that she handles very well the saber, too.

"You are conscious that she will win", said everybody. Yes, realized. I didn’t even imagine something else.  She is a sword bearer; she is tall, she is left handed, more than that, she is an Olympic vice champion.

The fight was just a pretext for getting closer and closer to our discussion which I wanted to be natural and warm, with a character which is, certainly, natural and warm. I don’t think I finished all the questions and curiosities about Ana. She is lucky that is only 23. And, although she is in holiday, she said that she already misses the sword hall.

The difference between  sword and  sabre
The sword, Ana Brînză’s arm, is the only one considered unconventional. The hit is given by prick and it is valid when the pointed and hits any part of the adversary body. The rule or priority in attack is not applied at sword.  Sabre is a conventional arm. Just like the case of foil, the rule or priority in attack is valid here. The hit is given by cutting or prick, the goal being the trunk, the head and the adversary’s arms.
