The sponsor of Steaua, Gigi Becali, says that he saved Steaua from demoting in the season when he took the team and he made us understand that he had made an arrangement at Oneşti.
"I took Steaua from the 13th place; it was very close to demoting. So powerful was Neţoiu in the Romanian football at that time so that Steaua could reach in the 2nd league instead of Rocar. Piţurcă threatened everybody, he said that he would take the team out of the field in a match, and that scene weighted a lot.
I have also been to Oneşti, I have drunk some spritzers with Nicolae Puiu, I don’t know what I would get if I made the same, now there is DNA. The spritzer could be too big, there were chances to get drunk", said Becali at Telesport.
Victor Piţurcă had taken Steaua in the break between the turn and return of the season 1999-2000 and he managed to bring the team from Ghencea up to the 3rd place in the championship in spite of a disastrous beginning. In March 2000, Steaua imposed with 3-1 at Oneşti thanks to the goals scored by Carabaş, Dănciulescu and Trică.
